Why I am doing a startup at age 51

I saw a problem that has been affecting many people in the world. I looked around. There was no simple solution.

So I set out to build a solution. An app.

I have invested a lot of time, energy and money. In the beginning, it was just myself. Most friends have no idea what I was talking about. I was not good at explaining this new concept.

Then I was able to convince a few people who understood my vision. We became a team. None of us get paid, but we keep doing this on a daily basis. Why?

There is a problem to be solved, and most people aren’t even aware of the problem, because they have gotten so used to existing methods that are outdated. We want to make a difference. We get excited when we receive customer feedback like this:

Feedback like “Good stuff this is” is what keeps us going.

We are hoping that our solution will eventually be accepted by a lot of users, thereby making this world just a tiny bit more beautiful.

Our success will be having hundreds of millions of people using our app. When that happens, we can make some good money, while enjoying the high of having many positive feedback. Our investors can enjoy good return on their investments. Our parents and friends will be proud of us.

More importantly, we will have learned so many new skills and insights into human psychology and behavior. These will sure help us in our future endeavors.

I have worked many years in large corporations, in different functions, up to senior levels. I mostly enjoyed my work, as I could often get a kick out of changes I implemented. But more often, I would be wasting my time in politics and big company inefficiency. If I did make a difference, I could only make it to a small number of people — my customers and my colleagues.

This time we are trying to make a global impact, and we can see the results directly.

We are all very excited to see the launch of the app. No matter how many will use our app, we will have done something meaningful in our lives, by our own choice, with our own creativity. And we will have made this world a little more beautiful and pleasant.
